My Naked Garden

Alright. I’m dying here. What’s the deal? It was 71 yesterday and it’s going to be near freezing again on Tuesday? By this time last year, I had my entire garden planted.

By May of last year, my garden looked like this. I had already envisioned salads full of goodness, nights of canning the booty and grilling anything grill-able.

Even my winter squash was discovering the topside of soil. Pretty, little dainty leaves smiled back at me each morning.

Biceps and I were eating spinach salads like nobodies business.

And my tiny, green tomatoes were just starting to ripen.

I’m hoping it won’t be too late to get my plants in the ground before the Okie weather shoots from a balmy 65 degrees to 104 degrees.

However, this is what is staring back at me each time I look through the french doors. Naked dirt. Void of anything green or edible. I’m trying to be patient, but it isn’t happening.

Has anyone else been impatient and planted already? Should I continue to wait? I’d love to hear what you have to say.

Good Sunny Morning!! Following the Old Farmer’s Almanac this year, I planted lettuce, onions, peas, carrots, garlic, & spinach yesterday. You are 1 zone warmer in the Almanac, so the planting dates for you were approx. 1 month earlier – but given the “are-you-kidding-me?!” weather we’ve both been having – my vote is to go ahead & plant. I had hoped to do a full-on Almanac experiment & plant according to the “favorable moon phases” but the snow & ice in March got in the way! ugh If you think your ground is still too cool, you could try covering it w/ black plastic for a few days to warm it up. I for one am believing the The Great Spring Warm-up 2013 is on it’s way – for real this time! Have a Great Day!!!

      Janice-
Yikes! I hope that my lettuce and spinach will still survive. I’ve been nervous as it’s been dipping down to the 20’s on some nights, still. I think I’ll plant today, per your advice and hope for the best!

I decided to chance it and I put my cold weather crop in this weekend. I am in the within the city limits of Saint Louis, MO so we are a little warmer than my zone says. I put in onion starts, carrot, spinach, lettuce and swiss chard seeds and have been hardening off my Brussels sprouts, broccoli and cauliflower.

I say plant, lady, plant. It you lose this round the world won’t end.

Poor garden – that looks really sad. But here in Germany ist even worse- we’ve still snow over here! Now I think about having a little garden with lots of flowerpots in the apartment, but we haven` t enough space.
So: We ‘re also waiting for better temperatures.
    Greetings from Marie, Hamburg

      Marie-
SNOW?! That’s crazy. I am so ready to plant, it’s not even funny. I hope to do so today, if this rain will let up. And-I miss Germany! My Great-Grandpa used to teach at the university in Hamburg and I was born in Landstuhl. I hope to come visit again soon!
