DIY Organic Eye Makeup Remover

I’ve been having a blast this past month finding replacements for every day things I buy and use at home. My month long challenge of slowly ridding our house of nasty chemicals began several weeks ago.

My first item to replace was my face lotion. I created a Recipe for Facial Moisturizer. I moved on to replacing my dishwasher detergent-DIY Organic Dishwasher Detergent, face washCheap, Organic Face Wash  and finally last week I shared several DIY Household Green Cleaner recipes.

I am concocting my own household replacements with little more than what I have on hand or what I can find at the organic market.

But the replacements must meet or exceed three important expectations for this frugal gal:
1. It must be easy to replace-no beakers or science lab experiments. Thank you.
2. It must be just as good or better than the current product I’m using and,
3. It must cost the same or less than the current product I’m using.

If the product I create passes the final test-me using it for over two plus weeks to make sure it does its job-then I’ll be sharing it with you. I will break down the cost for you, provide you the recipe and give you my honest opinion of the final product.

Today, I’ll be sharing a tested and loved recipe for Eye Makeup Remover.

This recipe only requires two ingredients. And, it ends up costing $1.13 for 3.5 oz.

I have very delicate skin, and my eyes irritate pretty easily. I was skeptical making my own remover, but was pleased with the simple results.

Here’s all that you’ll need to make your very own Eye Makeup Remover:

(This recipe will make 3.5 oz of remover)
4 TBS Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil
3 TBS Organic Sweet Almond Oil
Container

Use a funnel if needed and measure the 4 TBS of Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

Next, add the 3 TBS of Sweet Almond Oil. Cap tightly and shake.

Squeeze out a little onto a pure cotton ball and gently wipe across your eyes to remove makeup.

I always wash my face first with my Cheap, Organic Face Wash before removing my eye makeup. This softens up the eyeliner and mascara, which will remove easier and it helps to avoid tugging at the delicate skin around my eyes.

It only takes a little of the Eye Makeup remover to go a long ways.

This recipe was very simple to make and super cheap. There’s no going back for this gal.

Here’s the financial breakdown of this Eye Makeup Remover Recipe (know that 1 oz = 2 TBS):

Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil is $5 for 16 oz (or $.31 per oz). For this recipe, we needed 2 oz (or 4 TBS)=$.61.
The Sweet Almond Oil is $5.75 for 16 oz (or $.35/oz). For this recipe, we needed 1.5 oz (or 3 TBS)=$.52.

To make 3.5 oz of Eye Makeup Remover the total cost was=$1.13

(This recipe is replacing my 2 oz Physician’s Formula eye makeup remover which is $5.50.)

So, I’m skeptical but optimistic. I’ve bought expensive and inexpensive eye make up remover and they all seem to irritate my eyes, so I’m willing to try this. But I have to ask how the olive oil affects your skin. I’m prone to acne, so it makes me nervous to think about olive oil on my skin. Any thoughts? Thanks for sharing. I found you through TT&J.

Olive oil is great for the skin. A quick google search and you’ll see benefits galore. Many people think that stripping the natural oils off their skin removes the acne/bacteria. In fact, drying out your face oftentimes creates a greater problem. Your skin will go into overdrive trying to replenish your skin with more oils-which then you strip away again, etc. Eventually, it creates an imbalance. Using oil to clean your skin is natural and very effective!

When I was a teenager I used to use Baby Oil to remove eye make-up. It did the trick but was a little messy. I think this might be a little more gentle and better for the skin. Might just give this a go. Thanks for sharing at Etcetorize! I’m really enjoying all of your ideas for chemical free products~

Thanks for sharing this great idea. They discontinued the oil-based eye makeup remover that I loved and I have not been able to find a replacement for it. I already have the olive oil so I only need the almond oil to make your recipe. I will try it out for sure. I saw your post over at Carolyn’s “Homework” blog party.

I’m very in to natural ingredient beauty products. I use a sugar/cocoa mixture to wash my face, and alittle coconut oil soap. I laugh to myself sometimes when I realize how many foods I have in my bathroom! This morning, I got a grape to rub on my face because of the natural wrinkle fighting properties of grapes. I’m not ashamed to say I get food all over my face! Thanks for sharing your great recipes. I’m going to try out this eye makeup remover, and using oatmeal as a face wash. I use sugar because it is natural antibacterial and sugar helps to hydrade skin. Crazy, huh?

someone above mentioned using grapeseed instead of almond oil. since i have both grapeseed and olive oil in the house i’m curious if this combo would be ok instead of buying one more ingredient? or is there something in particular about almond oil that works?

I have a GREAT natural facial cleanse recipe for you!! This is something I have been using for months now, and I have extremely sensitive skin so it works fabulously!
You can easily modify it to your own likings, but here is my breakdown:
    4 parts castor oil(roughly $3.00 for a bottle containing 6oz)
2 parts Vitamin E oil(Price varies on whether you buy gel caps or pure oil, but roughly $5.00 a bottle for 3 oz of pure oil)
1 part tea tree oil($5-$7 for a bottle)
And a fair amount of non-flavored coffee grounds.
You can also add essential oils for scent, but I tend to leave those out because even they irritate my face sometimes. This mix is also extremely successful at removing make-up, even eye make up. Now to explain what each ingredient does for your skin!
    1. Castor Oil helps with inflammation, as well as works deep down to clear pores.
    2. Vitamin E oil returns moisture to the skin, without leaving it clogged or oily. When we use harsh chemical cleaners it dries our skin, forcing our bodies to overproduce oil and create clogged pores and oily spots. Leaving moisture will reverse that, leaving a perfect balance of oil on the skin.
    3. Tea tree oil is a natural anti-bacterial solution. It helps with breaking down the dirt and grease in your pores.
    4. Coffee grounds are important because the caffeine improves circulation and reduces puffiness in the eyes. It also serves as a gentle exfoliate, helping remove dead skin cells.
The best method to using this cleanser is to “steam” your face with a warm wash cloth for 5-10 minutes before applying the oil. This allows for the pores to open up. You MUST massage it in, and massage well because the longer you work it in the better it works. For ideal results you then “steam” your face with a warm wash cloth for another 5-10 minutes before rinsing with warm water. Don’t worry, your face may seem like there’s some oil left, but once you dry it with a towel it’ll feel baby soft and look flawless. It seems like a lot of work, but I find that it works well even with a quick apply(skipping the towel before applying), but that you should still massage as much as possible and allow it to sit on your face while you wash your hair, etc. It will make a current breakout immediately fade, as well as prevent new ones and make you look much younger as well! Good luck!

I just use plain old organic coconut oil to remove my eye make up. It works great and I swear the skin around my eyes looks better since I started using it. I also swipe a little bit across my lips at night and it prevents them from getting chapped over night because of the dry, how water heat (in winter) or the A/C (in summer). It doesn’t burn or irritate my eyes at all.

This is a great idea. Another one that doesn’t require any mixing in organic coconut oil. No worry about sensitive skin, suprisingly doesn’t leave a greasy film, is healing and takes off the most difficutl make up. I have been using it for several years now and get a huge jar from Vitacost.com for around $20. I spoon some out in a container for the bathroom and I can use it for cooking too!

Hello! Your blog is great! I have been making your all natural beauty products, and I have to say I really like them, except this one seems to bother my eyes. Maybe I am applying it incorrectly? Most of the time the only eye makeup I wear is mascara, so I thought this might be a gentle way to remove the mascara without rubbing my eyes with soap. But the remover got into my eyes a little, and left my vision a little hazy and my eyes felt irritated all day the next day. Do you have any advice on applying the remover to avoid this? Thanks!

      Pamela-
I’m so sorry to hear this! Perhaps your eyes are sensitive to the Sweet Almond Oil? Or perhaps you aren’t getting it all off? I use the tiniest amt with a cottonball and make sure to remove it all. I haven’t had an issue, but everyone’s different? Hope this helps!
